Totally right: you’ve been ripped. But don’t get mad, get a strategic partnership. The Pope writes the Bull, I repackage it—basically, I throw away all the spiritual stuff—and you publish it and the two of us split the profits. I call it a public private papal partnership! The publisher, you, will bear any legal costs, but there won’t be any because this leaps out at me from his Bull: “I am aware that nowadays documents do not arouse the same interest as in the past and that they are quickly forgotten.” So he’s not even going to remember. Which makes me think maybe we should do a video instead. Just thinking off the top of my head here. It is so what I call “an exciting opportunity” to spread some “good news” by bringing Wall Street to the Vatican Walls! The past is past. Look to the future. As for the past, history will judge you in the future. As the Essenes were to Jesus, so you will be to the Holy See. Your scrolls of wisdom will become as famous as the Dead Sea.

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

I was hoping to a secular high priest. I don't believe stripping out the spiritual content is a good idea, since it is a market differentiator, but we could neutralize any moral obligations, or calls to personal sacrifice, unless directed at the lower social orders.

What would Pierre Omidyar say?

Phil Cubeta

Thanks, Tom, blogged it. I remember discussions on Omidyar.net years ago about giving users "rights" to assemble to discuss the direction of the site, and how it was run, so it could become a microcosm of a populist democracy. Pierre was not too keen on that.

Phil Cubeta

Well we could discuss things, just not have representatives who would meet with him to set direction, or even vote. We were "guests," or "users." No business model emerged, Facebook did, and the site came down.

Phil Cubeta

Our overall topic was how to make a better world. It was instructive for me at the time. So many kept saying, "How wonderful we are given this site as a gift!" So many gifts from the internet. And now we realize what knowledge/power mean. Pierre certainly does.
