The Associated Press reported that micro-endorsements can net a celebrity upwards of $1,000 per tweet, with ad.ly's top celebs earning about $10,000 per tweet.
Ad.ly's roster of celebs includes Mariah Carey, Kim Kardashian, Chris Brown, 50 Cent, Paris Hilton and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. In the last year, it has placed 24,000 endorsements for 150 brands and raised more than $6 million in venture capital.
A staff of 22 includes several workers who specialize in writing the "celebrity tweets" to sound like the celebrity.
I don't know if this is shameful or just good business, but I confess I get $5 a tweet for writing Mistress Candidia's celebrity Tweets endorsing Wealth Bondage, adly itself, her own status as a semi-divine goddss, and the whole free market set up. She keeps the other $9,950 per Tweet, and wants to cut me back to $5 a Tweet, no benefits, and no union contract. "We are broke!" she says. I don't know about we, but I sure am. Still, if we are broke, I will do my bit, Mistress!
