Part of self-reliance is seeing that what was stolen is returned; fighting for our lives includes holding thieves accountable. Unity is thus key to a self-reliant strategy.

Phil Cubeta

Self reliance and the rule of law. You could write many a Western on that theme. How do the shopkeepers and school teachers behave when the gang and its boss run the town? The owner of the bank's brother is sheriff. "Good fences make good neighbors." That means the rule of law prevails?

Jay Taber

It would be tough to top The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance for lessons in self-reliance, although The Magnificent Seven comes in a close second.

Of course Crusoe had Friday.

Would that we had the good manners to drop dead when we grew old and infirm beyond the ability of our families to keep our useless bodies alive. After we've exhausted our productive capacities and run down our savings, what good are we as? Some old flesh with old flesh smell stalking the Thanksgiving turkey.

Phil Cubeta

"Home is where when you go there, they have to take you in." That line comes from "The Death of the Hired Man," about a situation like the one you describe, Enrique. The man come home to die volunteers to work on the farm to work off whatever debt his final illness incurs.

"Would that we had the good manners to drop dead when we grew old and infirm beyond the ability of our families to keep our useless bodies alive."

My body passed this point a few years ago, otherwise I'd agree.

Phil Cubeta

Long term care insurance may be the solution. I will be happy to introduce you to an appropriately licensed agent.
