Yes, sir, in my pajamas, correct. Sir? Well, they say I invited it in, but that's contested. I'm sorry I shot it but it kept coming at me. It was big. And gray. With tusks and a funny trunk. That's correct, sir, no circus at all.

That sounds about fair. Someone who is so negligent as to compromise the trust and reputation of an entity in the nonprofit world is clearly a muppet and not fit to lead that venture.
But the act itself was silly and of little impact, and it would be harsh to lose employment and association with a project that you clearly care very deeply about.
Sticking him in the corner with a dunce hat was exactly the right response, in my opinion. Meanwhile everyone gets to learn a good lesson about trust and fraudulent marketing (fraudulent marketing? a tautology, in my mind!) in an age of low-opportunity cost communications.

I keep thinking he is back, but then it turns out to be that Kornbeefsky character.

From the NY Times article it appears that the financial penalty is a one-time thing rather than a reduction in salary.
Not disputing the appropriateness of the punishment, just refining the meaning of "Financially Penalized" which was left out of the board announcement.
An encouraging thing that is mentioned in the board announcement is that they intend to contact all donors since December 1st. (Encouraging assuming that they're going to mention the seminal incidents and not just new policies resulting from them, which wasn't explicitly stated.)
