"I saw a woman flayed the other day; you haven no idea how it altered her appearance for the worse." Jonathan Swift.
I know that if torture becomes institutionalized, competent people will be found to do it, and promoted when they do a good job. The best suited to the work will find, mentor and promote others as qualified, competent, and enthusiastic as they are themselves. But maybe a better solution is ready to hand: DARPA Trauma Bot. Couldn't these mechanical surgeons take over the military's torture duties? That would spare us corrupting an entire generation enlisted men and their leaders. Would that the work of a moral surgeon could be delegated as easily. But for satire, the Roman way is still the best. As the knife goes in, you have to make good eye contact with the patient and talk him or her through each step of the cure.
