What is the ecosystem in which your organization must thrive? Can you map that field?
- Advisory Board of your Organization
- Advisors to donors
- Advisors to Board
- Firms for which advisors work
- Allied nonprofits locally
- Allied nonprofits around the country
- Political leaders and policy makers
- Community foundation
- For profit providers of gift funds
If we see "fund-raising" as a relationship between your organization and a donor, what are we missing? Let's say we made it our goal to increase total giving, to make giving more strategic and effective, to make donors more fulfilled, as well as to increase total dollars given to your org - who besides you would benefit? (Other nonprofits would, as would advisors and their firms). And how then can we create a community-based program in which those who do benefit besides your organization assist with sponsorships, gifts in kind, or labor?
In a way, advisor competes with advisor and nonprofit with nonprofit for a share of the philanthropic dollars and philanthropic clients, but in another way we all have a stake, including a stake as citizens, in increasing the total dollars given and the number of satisfied and engaged givers. How we collectively can be good stewards of this ecosystem so that it grows and thrives - that seems to me to be a very important question and one not often asked.
