Omidyar.net $25,000 Prize Money

We'd like you to know Omidyar Network will provide $25,000 for the community of omidyar.net members to decide where the money ought to be invested.

How it happens is up to you. We'd love it if the community would work together to create a process to find/vet/decide how to invest the money. It would probably be useful to start the discussion on what this process might look like in a new thread (or even in a new group).

Maybe someone wants to make the first swing at it?

In a significant break with foundation top down philanthropy, the Omidyar's will award the money based on criteria, and a process created by and managed by the community itself at Omidyar.net/home. What? Yes, the people will decide, and will even decide how to decide. Go figure. Sounds like the lunatics have taken over the asylum. If this catches who knows where it could lead? Democracy, maybe. Were the Omidyar's to add a few zeroes, or ten, awarding many such prizes, as they could, they might revolutionize more than philanthropy. Who knows, maybe all those highly paid staff at the big foundations could be disintermediated by an online community? For better or worse?

Remember, Klaus, that $25 k out billions is $25 k the Omidyar's could have kept. Be grateful for whatever blessings. If it works, who knows. The Omidyars have the wherewithal to rewrite the history of giving, or write a new chapter. Their ideals you might well endorse. I hope their little pilot works and that it stirs up a national conversation about "the proper uses of wealth," or as it is fashionable now to say, "social investment."

Most givers, including the Omidyars would prefer to keep giving nonpolitical and noncontroversial, ameliorating problems caused by political programs ceded to those less charitable at heart.

Well one of the beliefs and visions of Omidyars is that every individual has a gift to give. So the visions, practical ideas and tools that are most promising to bring about individual empowerment (in both tangible and intangible ways) within short and long run can be funded based on some objective scale or score. Foundation and philanthropy are currently unable to identify truely gifted individuals, cultural creatives or social entrepreneurs.

The Omidyars lack the courage of their convinctions and their words...

They start with the smallest of problems and actually provide scant resources for hardly anything to be produced by their efforts.

They seem self centered in nature and mask their wealth in the disguise the they are doing good.

I have read that they both plan on divesting their their entire fortune down to it's last 1% in their lifetime but have they actually following through on their plans. Of course not if you judge them by their actions on the Omidyar Network...

A shady disguise is all that it is.
