The Meaning of Philanthropic Leadership
Tuesday, June 15, 2004
Live web and teleconference
3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Eastern time
Presented by the Karoff Center at TPI
Be interested to see whether Peter's Sleepwalkers is included. Sorry to see no bloggers among the panelists. Seems like the leaders in question are mostly philanthropic insiders. Are we talking about "the meaning" of delegated authority and leadership (MBA-style) inside organizational pyramids, and status hierarchies, or are we talking about how philanthropists might find and fund another Alinsky, Martin Luther King, Brodsky, or Havel? Are we talking about institutional leadership, moral leadership, or a Great Awakening? And if so, what would make us think that leadership would emerge from above, among the Sleepwalkers? Wouldn't that be unusual, nearly unprecedented? (Won't those with the most to lose, i.e., their presumptive status as leaders, be the last to awaken?) To Peter's great credit he has convened this conversation among leaders in a public space open to all. Likely, the proceedings will be posted and we can discuss as much as we please.
