Patricia Angus, JD sets the highest standard in private wealth consulting. In this elegant post she asks her peers, "Are you hired help or hired to help?" Hired to help means having the courage of counsel and assist, even when the client needs to be challenged. Hired to help in King Lear is the Fool. Hired help are Lear's Trusted Machiavellian Counselors, and his Loyal Uncritical Servants. Here and there in our field I see faint flickers of awareness that we are hired help all the way, and always will be, and are proud of it, and aspire no higher. Those who are hired help generally describe themselves as Trusted Advisors, and why would a client not trust one who mirrors back the client's illusions and runs the client's complex errands, and serves as some actually say, as "Consigliere"? To be the client's morals tutor (I speak here from painful experience) is to be at best a World Class Fool, something I could not accuse anyone else of being, not even Patricia Angus. She is closer to Cordelia. In her silences are shelves of books. For the sake of our field, I hope she writes her moral truths in full.
