Fortune reports a drive by Gates and Buffet to have their peers give half of net worth to charity. This would make the givers cultural heros. If, on the other hand, we use the estate tax system to confiscate half of the net worth of the richest people that would make them schmucks. So, I think giving should be voluntary, and we just need a way to make sure that 100% of billionaires are generous. Otherwise we have free riders. Think about it. Assume, conservatively, that 1% of the world's richest people are selfish, manipulative, controlling, SOBs with zero concern for their fellow man. Assume they pass on their values and their valuables to their heirs. Assume they hire Trusted Advisors to perpetuate their manipulative and collusive family dynasty for 100 years, with their wealth doubling every 5 years. Assume the good people give away half in each generation. Now, you do the math! Who will rule us as time goes by?
Who will have the whip hand? I am good with that. Far be it from me to object. It is all good. Now, back to my cubicle. I am drafting an essay on Self Reliance from
my Boss to those we are about to terminate.
"I would give you pathetic losers a break, but it would just weaken your resolve to fend for yourself. I would be doing you and the genetic pool a grave disservice to interefere with market outcomes. The strong prevail. The weak perish. I have not chosen your fate. You have chosen it. Had you been strong like me, and crushed others under your boots, you would not be crushed now in your turn." I am rereading Ayn Rand and Satan in
Paradise Lost to get the tone right. Otherwise I am out on my hump with the others.
